  • Hanna & Gary’s Sandburn Hall Wedding

Hanna & Gary’s Sandburn Hall Wedding

It’s funny how things work out.

Back when my kids were in primary school I used to donate a photo shoot voucher as a raffle prize.  Disappointingly, despite there being a winner every time, it was very rare that people would actually claim their prize.

There was this one family I do remember claiming their prize.  A lovely young couple named Hanna and Gary.  We spent about an hour together crafting memories.

I have since come to find out that on that day, they both agreed that if they were to get married, they would like me to be their photographer, on the basis that Gary was not fond of having his photo taken but felt comfortable with me.

Well, here we are, almost 6 years later!

This wedding was a great pleasure to shoot.  Not only was it lovely to spend time with Hanna and Gary again, it was also my first visit to Sandburn Hall Golf Club.  Add to that almost perfect weather, and you’ve got a recipe for some spectacular photos.

    Speaking of which….

  • Sam & Paul’s Hornington Manor Wedding

Sam & Paul’s Hornington Manor Wedding

Every wedding I photograph is an honour and a pleasure, those who ask me know how much I love what I do. But when I’m photographing the wedding of someone I know it’s even more special.

Playing such an important part of my old school friend Paul’s wedding day meant a lot, and having the chance to catch up with a few of the guys from school felt like the last 20+ years since we left never happened.

Add to that the fact that it was an unbelievably mild February day in the beautiful surroundings of Hornington Manor, and I’d say 2024 is getting off to a pretty special start.

The gorgeous venue: @horningtonmanor looked even better because of the stunning flowers by @hydeparkflowerclub.by.dotties

The bridal party looked stunning with help from @hair_by_ashley_mitchell and @facesbylaurenrippin

We were entertained by @lilykerbeymusic throughout the day, and @stangers_theband in the evening.

And my word, what a fantastic beef dinner by @thehogandapple.

All this meant that the photos came easy for me (@jlmweddings) and @alex_wilden.

Leanne & Matthew’s Thornbridge Hall Wedding

My first visit to Thornbridge Hall was most certainly not a disappointment, the venue is absolutely stunning inside and out, and the grounds are breath-taking.

I also had the pleasure of a second visit to the St Thomas Church (STC) Sheffield for Leanne and Matthew’s ceremony.

In all, a beautiful day in the company of some genuinely kind and friendly people.  It really doesn’t feel like a job on days like this!

  • Cally & Neil’s Wedding in York

Cally & Neil’s Wedding in York

You know those days where it rains, then it’s sunny, then it rains again?  Yep, that pretty neatly describes the weather on Cally & Neil’s wedding day at the DoubleTree by Hilton in York.

Regular readers will know that this was not my first time at the York DoubleTree.  I actually photographed the first ever wedding here, or at least the first ever wedding at the DoubleTree by Hilton, a few years early.

Funnily enough we had a similar situation with the weather that time.  We managed to get out and take some photos on the York walls in the early afternoon, and then the rain came along and scuppered any plans we might have had to get out again later for the sunset.

Weather aside, a beautiful day and one worth reliving in this selection of highlights from the photos I took on the day.

Gear, Tools & Techniques :: How I Approach Wedding Photography

    I know what you’re thinking.

Another photographer blabbing on about his camera gear.

Well, as much as I do love discussing camera gear, this update is really more about how my tools and techniques will benefit you as a bride or groom-to-be.

The first ever DoubleTree by Hilton, York Wedding

This is the story of the first ever wedding at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in York

    Let me explain.

For my initial meeting with Nick and Victoria we got together at the Best Western Monkbar Hotel in the centre of York.

The Monkbar Hotel was to be their wedding venue, so it seemed like a good opportunity to combine our planning meeting with a scout around.

    An Autumn Themed Wedding

What better way to to beat the autumn blues than to embrace the beauty of the season with an autumn themed wedding?

Orange was the colour of the day.

The bright orange contrasted beautifully with the earth tones and wood that decorated the venue.

Autumn wasn’t the only theme for the day though.

    A Rossington Hall Wedding Reception

** This wedding was featured in Love My Dress wedding blog in Jan 2018, which is awesome!

As soon as Kathryn first mentioned Rossington Hall I got excited.

Well, excited and disappointed that I would have to wait a whole year before her and Ste’s wedding day.

I had done my research online, looked at photos of what Rossington Hall looked like on a typical wedding day.

It was only actually a few weeks before the wedding day and we met at the Doncaster venue on an open day that I was able to truly appreciate the beauty of this magnificent house.

Truly, Rossington Hall is a beautiful wedding venue.

Yes, from a photographer’s perspective the halls at very dark and an absolute pain to take photos in.

The grounds more than make up for it though, so long as the weather plays along.

Speaking of the weather, a spot of rain may potentially have caused difficulties for the Markham Main Colliery Brass Band who were set up to play during the welcome reception out in the gardens.

Fortunately there was no rain, in fact it was glorious sunshine all through the day.  Something of a rare treat for a UK August Bank Holiday weekend.

St Lawrence Church, Hatfield Wedding Ceremony

If your wedding venue is Rossington Hall and you are wanting a church ceremony, St Lawrence is a natural choice.

It is a short 15 minute drive away and an absolutely beautiful church.

Plenty of space inside, should easily accommodate a sizeable wedding party.

Also, for a church in the middle of a town, the parking is surprisingly good.

The only logistical issue we had was the sharp blind bend just before the church entrance which made life difficult for the wedding car to stay nearby.

    See ya next time.

Lyndsey & Steve’s Superhero Themed Whitley Hall Hotel Wedding

Getting married on a bank holiday in Britain is a bit of a gamble, weather-wise.

Luckily Lyndsey and Steve landed on the first sunny August bank holiday weekend since 1874.

I have been to Whitley Hall hotel before so I was already excited about coming back, when they told me about the superhero theme I just couldn’t wait.

    So, here’s the story.
