My Favourite Wedding Photos of 2018

When your job is photographing people on the happiest day of their life so far, it’s pretty tough to have a bad year.  I guess if I didn’t book many weddings, that would be one way.  Thankfully 2018 saw me travelling around to plenty of weddings so yes, this was another very good year :-).

So before we go blazing headfirst into 2019, here is a look back at some of my favourite photos I took in 2018.

Note that I said favourite, not best Remember that the photos I take are of real people, doing real things on real wedding days.  I don’t pose people and I don’t try to recreate magazine style wedding photos.  What that means is that, whilst other ‘best of 2018’ blogs will be showcasing spectacular works of art, here you will find just a plain old bunch of photos of happy people.

I would love to photograph your wedding day

Getting married and looking for a photographer? I would love to be involved. If you’re the kind of couple that prefer the photos to happen naturally without turning your wedding day into a photo shoot then give me a shout, let’s find out if I’m available and then we can go from there.

  • St Joseph’s Church & Clapham Village Hall, Bedford Wedding :: Shauna & Russell

St Joseph’s Church & Clapham Village Hall, Bedford Wedding :: Shauna & Russell

    My first wedding in Bedford!

Shauna and Russell’s wedding day happened to fall on the same day as Bedford’s river boat festival meaning road closures and heavy traffic on the way to the church.

Not what I was hoping for when I was already unsure whether I would be able to get parked anywhere near the church.

Turns out I had nothing to worry about, as usual.

At this point in what will no doubt end up being a legendary summer of 2018, not a drop of rain had fallen in weeks.

The glorious sunshine was in full force as guests wafted themselves with paper fans through the day.

As it happened the weather fit nicely with the Carribbean themed food and the mood never dipped all day.

The vast fields around the back of Clapham Village Hall meant we could take full advantage of the sun as it set in the later evening.

The golden, scorched grass blended beautifully with the setting sun as I took the happy couple out for a gentle photo-stroll.

  • Rockingham Arms, Wentworth Wedding :: Claire & Sam

Rockingham Arms, Wentworth Wedding :: Claire & Sam

Claire & Sam’s Wedding @ Rockingham Arms, Wentworth

    This is England.

You have to expect a certain unpredictability in the weather.

Yes, we all hope for glorious sunshine on our wedding day, or at the very least for no rain.

For Claire, heavy rain seems to follow her around, having been born during The Great Storm of 1987.

Luckily the rain only stopped by as a reminder.

It was a looming threat throughout the morning and into the early afternoon.  Knowing it was imminent we rushed through the group photos outside the church and we managed to just about make it into the cars before the heavens opened.

Boy did they open!  The poor Morris wedding car on the journey between St Margaret’s Church and the Rockingham Arms was pummelled with rain.

Fortunately the downpour was short-lived and we were able to get out in the evening to capture some truly memorising sunset portraits of the happy couple around Wentworth Village.

The Benefits of an Engagement Shoot

I talked about this already when I wrote about Claire and Sam’s engagement shoot earlier in the year.

Like many couples I work with, they were not particularly fond of the idea of having their photograph taken when they arrived for the engagement shoot.

By the time we were wrapping up our portrait session as the sun was setting on their wedding day you would never have known they were the same couple.

There was no coaching involved, no forced posing.  They just fell into place perfectly and just about every shot was a keeper.

You can see what I mean when you look through the highlights below, would you ever think these two didn’t like being photographed?

So, without further ado, here is the story of Claire and Sam’s wedding day in about 5 minutes.

  • Katie and Barnaby’s Surprise View Engagement Photo Shoot

Katie and Barnaby’s Surprise View Engagement Photo Shoot

As we walked through the heather to get the best view of the setting sun Katie was sharing with us stories of just how regularly cars are broken into whilst parked in Surprise View car park.

I tentatively glanced over my shoulder toward said Surprise View Car Park which was slowly disappearing into the distance, trying not to think about my own car which now felt somewhat vulnerable.

As the car park disappeared over the horizon I decided that the car didn’t really matter; I had my precious cameras strapped safely around my person, there was nothing left behind for them to take anyway.

  • Linacre Reservoir Engagement Photo Shoot

    Linacre Reservoir Engagement Photo Shoot

Madeleine and Andrew are getting married at the Clumber Park Hotel this coming August, and what better way to help them get acquainted with having their photos taken than having an engagement shoot around Linacre Reservoir.

We choose to meet in the early evening and were gifted with a beautiful sunset.  Linacre really is a great spot because you have the sun setting over the open water combined with the option to head up into the woods, two for the price of one really. So now, with their newly acquired posing skills ready for action, roll on the 27th August for the big day… see ya then!
