Emma & Oliver’s Magnificent Carlton Towers Wedding | Photos

This wedding was featured in Hitched UK back in Feb 2020.ย  Check it out ๐Ÿ™‚.

I imagine getting married at a place like Carlton Towers is every little girl’s dream.ย

This grade I listed country house is absolutely majestic inside and out.ย  I was especially taken aback by the fact that, when inside, you are made to feel less like a guest at a wedding venue and more a guest of the Duke of Norfolk himself.

Now, it should be known that ‘stately’ is not a word you would use to describe my style of photography.ย ย

Where your typical royal photographer has a particular set of crisp, clean portrait style images to produce, I tend to buzz around taking real photos of real people doing real things.ย  Fortunately that is exactly why Emma and Oliver brought me along for their wedding.ย ย

They wanted to capture the fun and feel of the day.

All the photos in this article were taken by JLM Wedding Photography.

With that said, when one finds oneself in such a stately environment, it would be a shame not to take advantage of such tremendous surroundings.ย  Carlton Towers is still a private residence.ย  Lord and Lady Gerald Fitzalan-Howard live there with their family, so we only had access to main parts of the house.ย ย

When I say only, Carlton Towers is no ordinary house.ย  We had plenty of plans to use the grand staircases and hallways if it had rained, fortunately we had no need for such plans in the end as the sun was well and truly shining.

This meant that we were able to take a supervised stroll through the private gardens for a couple of evening snaps before the sun went down.

Would I Recommend Cartlon Towers as a Wedding Venue?

I can imagine that Carlton Towers wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste.ย  It can come across as being very formal, stately and grandiose.ย  None of those are bad things by any means, in fact as I said at the start, stately homes such as Carlton Towers tick a lot of boxes for those planning a princess style wedding.

Add to that, the team running the day did so admirably.ย  Both event managers were attentive and courteous, and most importantly made sure everything ran smoothly.ย  As far as I could tell, Emma and Oliver had a perfect day at Carlton Towers.

I can imagine that if Carlton Towers is not the right venue for you, it would be pretty obvious upfront.ย  Basically what I’m trying to say is that this is not a boho venue.

Bottom line, I would definitely recommend Cartlon Towers as a wedding venue, so long as Stately is your style.

  • Doncaster Mansion House, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, St Winifred’s Church & Lady Margaret Hall Wedding

Doncaster Mansion House, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, St Winifred’s Church & Lady Margaret Hall Wedding

Yes, you read that heading right.ย  We really did go to all those places, albeit not in the same day.

    Doncaster Mansion House Wedding Ceremony

Aimee and Craig actually got married on the Wednesday before their actual wedding.ย  The only people present for this wedding were Aimee and Craig themselves, their children, Craig’s Best Man and Aimee’s Maid of Honour.

The ceremony took place in the kitchen of the Doncaster Mansion House.ย

Yes, the kitchen, complete with pots and pans.ย  Seriously cool stuff!

    Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Following the ceremony the entire party headed over to Yorkshire Wildlife Park for a family day out.ย  I was grateful to have been invited along and gladly accepted the invitation.ย  Although I wasn’t joining them in an official photographer capacity, I was happy to get a few snaps of them whilst I was indulging in a bit of wildlife photography.

    Best Western Lion Hotel, Worksop

Jump forward a few days and it is now Saturday morning.ย  Aimee and her full bridal party are now at the Lion hotel in Worksop to get ready for the actual wedding day.

This to me didn’t feel like any other wedding day morning.ย  Usually this is my time to start getting to know everybody.ย  This time I had already spent the Wednesday day with them all, so I felt especially at ease.ย  I think they felt the same too, meaning I was able to get much more natural pictures.

    St Winifred’s Church, Holbeck

The morning was all too brief and before we knew what had happened it was time to head over to church.

Aimee, Craig and I had already scoped out the church whilst we did their Engagement Shoot, so finding the church was no problem.ย  St Winifred’s church is one of those places you would never stumble upon accidentally, unless you happen to be wandering around the Holbeck Estate looking for such things.

It is a grand church, sitting majestically inside a gated garden, most of which is used as burial ground.

Inside the church is fairly dark and moody, with the odd pocket of sunlight leaking through the windows.

    Lady Margaret Hall, Holbeck Estate

The last stop of the day, another hidden gem that Aimee and party had spent days turning into a magnificent wedding venue.

Inside the usually somewhat bland hall they have installed a marquee.ย  This elevated the hall into a very glamorous wedding reception venue.ย  The tasteful decoration, again all done by Aimee and friends, looked amazing.

In a weekend of firsts, my very favourite was the wedding dinner.ย  Domino’s pizza!

As the sun began to set we went out into the fields for some photos.ย  I was invited by Chief Bridesmaid Hannah to take some ‘Bride Bitch’ photos.ย  To be honest I thought I had misheard her at first, but apparently not.ย  I guess you learn something new every day.

When we had finished with the bridesmaids we sent for Craig so that we could re-enact our engagement session during the final moments of the golden sunset.

It was during these portraits that i realised just how much of a difference it had made spending that extra day together and getting to know them.ย  When we first started out on the engagement shoot both Aimee and Craig were the first to admit they were uncomfortable in front of the camera.ย  By the time sunset came around though they seemed completely at ease, which made for a much more relaxed session and some amazing photos.

As the evening drew to a close and the drunken guests started waving sparklers around I felt it was time for me to leave them to it.ย  A perfect end to a really special few days with a group of lovely people.

To be honest, I’m probably not the right photographer for you.

St Lawrence Church, Hatfield & Rossington Hall Wedding

    A Rossington Hall Wedding Reception

** This wedding was featured in Love My Dress wedding blog in Jan 2018, which is awesome!

As soon as Kathryn first mentioned Rossington Hall I got excited.

Well, excited and disappointed that I would have to wait a whole year before her and Ste’s wedding day.

I had done my research online, looked at photos of what Rossington Hall looked like on a typical wedding day.

It was only actually a few weeks before the wedding day and we met at the Doncaster venue on an open day that I was able to truly appreciate the beauty of this magnificent house.

Truly, Rossington Hall is a beautiful wedding venue.

Yes, from a photographer’s perspective the halls at very dark and an absolute pain to take photos in.

The grounds more than make up for it though, so long as the weather plays along.

Speaking of the weather, a spot of rain may potentially have caused difficulties for the Markham Main Colliery Brass Band who were set up to play during the welcome reception out in the gardens.

Fortunately there was no rain, in fact it was glorious sunshine all through the day.  Something of a rare treat for a UK August Bank Holiday weekend.

St Lawrence Church, Hatfield Wedding Ceremony

If your wedding venue is Rossington Hall and you are wanting a church ceremony, St Lawrence is a natural choice.

It is a short 15 minute drive away and an absolutely beautiful church.

Plenty of space inside, should easily accommodate a sizeable wedding party.

Also, for a church in the middle of a town, the parking is surprisingly good.

The only logistical issue we had was the sharp blind bend just before the church entrance which made life difficult for the wedding car to stay nearby.

  • St Peter’s Church, Letwell & Travellers Rest, Brookhouse Wedding

St Peter’s Church, Letwell & Travellers Rest, Brookhouse Wedding

To fully appreciate what impressed me at Stephanie & Allen’s wedding, you need a little context first.  St Peter’s Church, Letwell is about 10 minutes by car from The Travellers Rest, Brookhouse.  That’s 10 minutes of open country roads where you are likely to average 50 miles per hour.

Why am I telling you this?  Well, Stephanie and Allen got married at St Peter’s Church, and then made their way over to The Travellers Rest for their reception.  What is worth noting is how the newlyweds went from church to reception….
